1. Mathematics for Radar and Electronic Defence

Course description: This course provides a useful mathematical toolkit for the Radar and Electronic Defence Engineer. Emphasis is on practical calculation and useful ‘tricks of the trade’ rather than mathematical rigour. The textbook, Advanced Engineering Mathematics, E. Kreyszig (Wiley) (with many editions available) is prescribed. Some notes are also made available to assist the student.

2. Introduction to Radar Systems

Dates: 4-8 March 2013

Presenter: Prof Piet van Genderen (Delft University of Technology)

Course description: This course presents the principles and techniques fundamental to the operation of a radar system. Radar Engineering is very much a system level topic, as the field requires at least some knowledge of a wide range of other engineering specialties. The course follows the recommended text book very closely. Specific course topics include: Course overview and introduction to radar, the radar equation, radar search and overview of detection and interference, propagation effects and mechanisms, characteristics of clutter, target reflectivity, target fluctuation models, Doppler processing, radar antennas, transmitters, receivers, exciters, radar signal processing, radar remote sensing.

3. Fundamentals of Radar Signal and Data Processing

Dates: 8-12 April 2013

Course description: This course presents the principles and techniques fundamental to the operation of the signal processing found in a radar system. The course follows the recommended text book very closely. Specific course topics include: Fundamentals for radar signals and signal processing, threshold detection of radar targets, constant false alarm rate detector (CFAR), Doppler processing, radar measurements, radar tracking algorithms, fundamentals of pulse compression, overview of radar imaging.

4. Introduction to Electronic Defence

Dates: 13-17 May 2013

Course code: EEE5120Z

Presenters: Ferdie Potgieter and Jacobus Vlok (CSIR)

Course description: The course aims to introduce the student to Electronic Defence. A good prior knowledge on the topics of digital signal processing, electromagnetics, mathematics and statistics is highly recommended for this course. A relatively good knowledge of radar and a moderate knowledge of communications would be very beneficial to students. Students should be competent in using scientific programming languages such as Matlab or Octave. Students have to master fundamental concepts in Electronic Defence on a high-level (identification of tactics and applications) as well as on a detail level (the design of a suitable detector to required specifications). Students are required to link theoretical concepts in Electronic Defence to typical applications and to solve problems of an engineering nature.

5. Special Topics in Radar: MIMO and New Concepts of Radar

Dates: 27-28 May 2013

Course description: This course is composed of two parts. The first part addresses the principles and techniques related to the operation of a MIMO radar system. The second part investigates a selection of new radar concepts for which the performances are improved by the use of MIMO techniques; several applications, GMTI/STAP, Foliage penetration radar, low frequency long range radar, multistatic and passive radars, will be illustrated in order to show the benefiting MIMO configurations. The course gives also the opportunity to review most of the techniques widely used in modern radar such as phased array electronically scanning antenna (ESA), adaptive processing, generalized likelihood detector (GLRT), moving target indicator (MTI), passive coherent location(PCL), waveform design and ambiguity function.

6. High Resolution and Imaging Radar

Dates: 3-7 June 2013

Course overview:

  • Part 1: High resolution radar topics, e.g. applications of the radar range equation in HRR, HRR design, HRR waveforms, synthetic high-range-resolution radar
  • Part 2: Synthetic aperture radar topics, e.g. SAR concepts, SAR signal properties, SAR processing algorithms
  • Part 3: Inverse synthetic aperture radar topics, e.g. ISAR concepts, ISAR geometry and signal modelling, radial motion compensation, image formation, interpretation of ISAR images, ISAR imaging using CLEAN techniques; polarimetric ISAR; recent advances.
 

7. Clutter and Detection in Clutter

Dates: 24-28 June 2013

Presenters: Prof Maria Greco and Prof Fulvio Gini (University of Pisa, Italy)

Course description: The course is organized in three parts, which mainly cover aspects related to radar clutter modelling and analysis, optimum and adaptive radar detection of targets embedded in correlated Gaussian clutter and in heavy-tailed non-Gaussian clutter.

8. Multi-Target Multi-Sensor Tracking and Data Fusion

Course description: The course provides an overview of the most popular methods and techniques in the field of multiple target tracking and multi-sensor data fusion. It introduces engineers, scientists and military technicians to a toolbox of readily used key technologies that can be implemented with success in the field. The course is designed to cover fundamental topics in detail, whereas more advanced topics and extensions are dealt with in such a way that they remain easily accessible to attendees.
